Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has stepped forward to defend Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang amid swirling allegations over the use of a private jet for her return from the United Kingdom. He redirected the blame to the former Akufo-Addo administration, accusing it of neglecting the maintenance of Ghana’s official presidential aircraft.
In a statement published on Facebook on Friday, May 23, Dr. Boamah clarified that the presidential jet is currently non-operational due to severe technical issues, including a corroded fuel tank. The aircraft is reportedly undergoing significant repairs abroad.
This rebuttal comes after Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleged that Vice President Opoku-Agyemang had returned to Ghana aboard a chartered private flight following her medically induced leave in the UK.
Dr. Boamah dismissed the accusations and fired back at the NPP, stating:
“Let the NPP that suffered the most humiliating defeat in recent memory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections know this: Akufo-Addo’s administration rundown the Presidential jet. Among others, its fuel tank is even corroded.”
The Defence Minister’s response underscores a broader political debate around state resources and accountability, especially in the wake of recent transitions in government.
