Court Awards Rev. Ntim Fordjour GH¢700,000 in Defamation Suit

2025-05-27  Papa Kobina Andoh

The Cape Coast High Court has awarded GH¢700,000 in damages to Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, following a defamation lawsuit against two individuals—Stephen Cobbah, popularly known as Adepa, and Yaw Korankye, also known as Ampong.

The legal action was prompted by defamatory statements made by the defendants on the popular WhatsApp platform “Assinman Politics Gh” in March 2024. The court, after reviewing the case, determined that the statements were not only false but damaging to the reputation of the MP, who also serves as a reverend minister.

In its ruling on April 28, 2025, the court ordered the two men to pay the GH¢700,000 compensation jointly and severally. In addition, each of them is to pay GH¢20,000 in legal costs.

The judgment further imposed a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from making any further defamatory remarks against Rev. Ntim Fordjour. They have also been directed to issue a public retraction and publish an unreserved written apology on the same digital platforms where the defamatory comments were originally shared.

This case serves as a strong warning about the consequences of reckless commentary and misinformation on digital platforms, particularly in political discourse.
